Who is Persephone?
The Story of How the goddess of Spring became the Queen of the Underworld

Persephone is the muse for this adventure.
Persephone, AKA “the Maiden”, was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, and the Greek goddess of fertility, new life, and the creative spark. The bringer of the vegetation, of new vining life, of Spring, and the buzzing of ideas flying from flower to flower, pollinators of new life. One day, Persephone was strolling in the forest unaware of any danger, and she was abducted, pulled from the warmth of sunlight and the soft grasses of lush green meadows. She was dragged down through the dirt and pulled down into the heart of the Earth. She was taken deeper and darker than anyplace she had ever been before, until she was pulled into the underworld. Here, in the darkness, she discovers another glowing world, of death, love, and new knowledge that comes from exploring the dark corners of the places so often avoided and feared and forbidden.
Persephone eventually becomes the Queen of the Underworld and the goddess of Death when she marries Hades, King of the Underworld. Ancient Greek mythology says that when she ate the sweet nectar of the forbidden pomegranate fruit, she was cursed/blessed to live part of her life in the underworld, banished from the light of the sun for six cycles, always cursed to leave our world above and spend part of the year in the underworld, in death, in the space below. Cursed to delve deep, to learn what needs to die, to make space for new sparks of life. Lady, goddess of new life, Queen of death.
So it is said that when Persephone rises back to the surface, she brings us Spring and the new life that will later yield ripe fruit. When she leaves to go back to the underworld, Winter returns. Even the air becomes cold and bitter when Persephone leaves. In this way, we can see Persephone becomes an archetypal representation of not just the descent into the depths, but also the first creative impulse, the spark of new life in our own psyche.
The descent into the underworld to find our creative impulse, to let die what needs to die, so we can leave space for the new. New inspiration, new discovery, igniting a new spark, finding the new knowledge in the dark glittering corners of the psyche.
We can journey deep within and find authentic experience. Real, personal, and lasting change is sparked by archetypal work. It opens doors and portals for exploring the depths of the psyche, and rising back up through the earth bearing new life, new spark, and new creative fire.
Persephone calls us to find and discover our unique self, its pieces and parts so eloquently hidden under the surface, to understand more deeply, to descend into the underworld, to let die that which no longer serves us, to let it fall away, to release, and die. To explore the places and find the tangible manifestation. Reborn. To rise back up through the dirt with new life, new spark, new fire. Now Persephone speaks and calls you!
